Importance and history of pillows
An essential part of the sleeping comfort is the pillow. Its history is closely related to that of the bed - and at the same time relatively sketchy. When did the pillow come about? Which development went through it as sleep underground? This summary will outline the history of the pillow.
The beginnings: Pillows in the early days
In stone age or early civilization people put peaces of wood or stones as pillows but now people prefer soft pillows.Nowadays put soft materials in them to bed, support their heads and cover themselves.
Pillows in Egyptian civilization
Presumably, the Egyptians were the first to make special arrangements for sleep. Are known metal racks that are very similar to today's beds in shape. One important difference, however, relates to the pillow. It was a metallic attachment with a round arch - a headrest. Some models were made of wood or even ivory. Also there was this "pillow" made of stone. On this arch, the Egyptians put their heads to sleep. The rigid position on the hard pillow arch has not been healthy or comfortable from today's perspective.
The Greeks and Romans developed the Egyptian bed and thus the pillow much further. It is certain that both cultures used animal skins, plants, linen and leather as the basis for the blanket and pillows. The camp was for wealthy people already from a real bed frame, which was decorated with these things.
The Romans partly practiced a veritable cult around the bed. There were mattresses, blankets, ornate bedsteads and of course pillows. The typical type of cushion was made of leather or fabric, which was filled with plant remains, reeds, hay, feathers or other materials. In addition, the Romans already knew the marriage bed and bedside and to the deathbed.
